(adapted from Love & Energy: Changing the Pattern)

In a tangled romantic situation, a line I remember from a TV show about heroes in hiding,

Smallville, says it all—

‘Sometimes people do things that you don’t expect and you don’t understand—

and sometimes they have a really good reason for it. ‘

There we have the heart of human relations, in its simple beating mystery.

You can spin around in crazy arrhythmia —because anytime you’re living in the beat of—

‘Why do people DO the things they DO? What is he/she thinking?’

you WILL go crazy…because, you can never, ever know…

Or, you can return to yourself, restore your own rhythm, get some business and mind it. While you ponder, get busy, change the focus, and create—

‘more will be revealed’, as the saying goes.

This is the key to relationship/creativity coaching from ChannelTherese.

And meanwhile, you will bring forth something beautiful from yourself.

As the saying goes, living well is the best revenge. Well, living well is an excellent principle, but the motive of revenge, can harden your heart.

The truest, greatest motive for love or money, is self actualization:

becoming the person you were meant to be.

The Gnostic gospels bring a blessing and a warning:

‘If you bring forth what is within you, what is within you will set you free.

If you do not bring forth what is within you, what is within you will destroy you.’

So with this motivation, we turn to business, and learning to say what needs to be said…because the same issues of expression that hold you back in love, will hold you back in business and the creative life.

And it all comes down to value:

I am worthwhile.

I am valuable.

I am worthy.

And you can say it with me, and see what feelings come up in your body when you do:

I am worthwhile.

I am valuable.

I am worthy.

I am a gift to the world.

I am a blessing to the world.

That last one is a little tough to get with, isn’t it?

When I was in training as a Certified Intuitive Healer at Stillpoint, learning new ways to see and feel and heal energy, after many years in the sometimes-brutal New York Broadcast business, all the classes had names. So instead of being say, the class of ’01, we were the ‘Blessings.’ We really had to grow into that. It felt, y’know, embarrassing…not something I could ever say on the air…but…

What if you and I really are a blessing to the world? With a gift to bring?

People say all the time, to deflate your ego,

‘What makes you think you’re so special? You’re not special. Nobody is special.’

As a broadcaster we were commonly told, ‘You’re only as good as your last airshift.’

Hearing that kills your spirit a little bit, doesn’t it?

The ego-deflaters are often cruel to themselves, or disappointed in themselves, or jealous, or have a misguided sense of how to inspire a person to their greatness. Because you have greatness, within you—greatness that will express itself in big or little ways.

We are each of us, unique, with a special gift to bring the world, which only we can bring.

Shakespeare said it—‘But above all else, to thine own self be true.

The world will not be complete, without the part we play. Every part in this passion play is essential to the wholeness of the world, so that means no one part is more, or less, important.

Just like a puzzle, without any one piece, the wholeleness is missing. Doesn’t matter if it’s the castle turret or a piece of the sky, a hole in the wholeness is still a hole, a missing piece, that must be found, before we can all be whole.

We’re here to restore our missing pieces, thru expression. And our little part just might save the world. But first we have to tune in, the find the missing pieces, which will bring about and restore our missing peace. We’re tuning in for inspiration, healing, creativity—and the courage to bring it forth. Because, as A Course In Miracles tells us, ‘My salvation comes from me’—and you are way more powerful than you know.

This is the Daily Channel Method of tuning in:

Who am I, and what do I want?

Say what needs to be said.

And let go of the outcome.

Take the actions you’re inspired to take.

And every day, create: we get to create heaven or hell each day.

And because heaven is within this moment, but we can create hell in our minds,

we have this one simple trick to restore heaven at any given time:

In a jam, pause, breathe, hold the mind steady in the light, and say,

‘God, show me another way of looking at this.’

You don’t even have to know who God is. Just try it as our little experiment, see what happens, and get back to me with your results…

If you want to take it to the next level, reach out to me for your coaching plan…

The old structures not based on integrity and truth will begin to crumble; your relationship, your work, your family structure, even the amount of money you make will shift. It could be a painful process, but hang on—the life you want is just beyond. You are building a palace beyond the shambles.

How do you replace what is falling away? Surround yourself with people who love and respect you. Leave the places where they don’t love and respect you. You will be able to feel it, now that you’ve learned to discern and tune into feelings and emotions. There is plenty of good energy in the world. Your job is to find it, and to protect yourself against the whirling dervishes who would unload their madness on you..

You may now be given a choice—you may be presented with the exact same old situation with new people, or the old people and situations may come back, changed by one or two degrees. Your job is to hold steady and hold on to the new values. Don’t worry, you are not stuck in an endless repeating cycle—this is just the question, ‘Are you sure you want change? Because you can have whatever you want’. So hold steady, don’t fall back, and what is not in integrity will fall away. It may feel like the same old place, but it’s not. The ancient Greeks saw life as an ascending spiral. When you feel like you’re back in the same old spot, you actually are seeing it from a higher perspective.

You may have to put a hold on relationships, or scale back your economic desires for awhile, and you may be lonely at times, but you will never want for anything. The money you have is there to take care of you now. You can make more money later, so don’t worry about keeping up with your old economic status for now. That will fall into place when you find your rightful place. You may make more money than you ever dreamed later, or you will find abundance in ways that you never discovered before. And it will be good practice, to see how much stuff you really don’t need, now that you’re not caught up in the trappings of the old life, and how the Universe, ‘(the Lord) works in mysterious ways, his wonders to provide.’ It will be good practice and give you great strength to see that you can live thru the fear of economic insecurity. Because, think of all the things you used to do to compromise yourself, your health, your happiness, just to make or hang onto money. We don’t have to live that way anymore. And—remember to be thankful for what you do have, because a thankful heart can change your attitude for a whole day. You can be thankful that the job, relationship, didn’t kill you while you were still in bondage!

Now is the time to focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want. Is there work, or a company, that holds up to your vision and your values? Or, can you create that company with like-minded people? In the meantime, is there interesting work you can do to make money where people are passing thru—look for the places that addictions run rampant—in stores, casinos, restaurants, or places where people gather or travel. Again, don’t worry, people won’t look funny at you and say how far you’ve fallen. Quite the contrary—when I left the airwaves, and worried that people would think I’d really lost it, I found out they really thought what an interesting, freedom-filled life I had.

This change is God’s way of getting you back into the flow of a different kind of life, meeting new people in new situations, getting new eyes on the world, and giving you a new kind of humility. Humility does not mean humiliation. It means understanding your right place in the world. You may need work where you can see the world go by for awhile, to see how you fit into it, and to see reflected back, how special you really are.

And perhaps, how badly you were treated, when you lived just to make money. You will gravitate to your right place. Just don’t get stuck at home, and on the reverse, don’t do anything that makes you feel ‘less than’. Besides, as a famous friend once told me, upon my suffering complete career humiliation, ‘It’s good to be humbled. It gives people sympathy for you. It lets people love you.’ You will be surprised, where your support comes from.

It’s not easy in this world, to live according to values. But that’s no excuse for not doing it. In your heart you know what’s right. Act on it, and you will be protected and taken care of, always.

An illustrative story from the life of Marilyn Monroe, recounted in ‘The Last Days of Marilyn Monroe’:

“ ‘You’re going to be a great star’ Hyde said. ’I know. Many years ago I discovered a girl like you and brought her to Metro—Lana Turner. You’re better. You’ll go farther. You’ve got more!’

‘Then why can’t I get a job?’ Marilyn asked. ‘Just to make enough to eat on.’

‘It’s hard for a star to get an eating job,’ Johnny said. ‘A star is only good as a star. You don’t fit into anything less.’ “

You are destined to do something truly wonderful with your life. We all are. We came here on a great mission. In the eyes of the world, it may be big, it may be small, but it’s big and wonderful to you. Your life’s mission may be to learn to speak up in the face of injustice—or your life’s mission may be to be a painter, or president of the United States, a writer of real-to-life fiction, a builder who makes people dreams brick by brick, or the most inspirational teacher your kids will ever know. Only your soul knows what you came here to do, and your soul is guiding you to a blaze of glory. Destiny will open the doors on time, like clockwork, and all you have to do is be present in the moments of your life, so you will be prepared to walk thru when the opportunity presents itself. Your life begins anew every day. Just don’t be deterred by the voices of fear down the hall, saying ‘don’t you dare walk thru that door.’ Even past ‘mistakes’ and ‘failures’ only serve to deliver you to this moment.

False humility will get you nowhere. Literally. Humbling yourself beneath what you came here to do does neither the world nor you any favors. Maybe you haven’t succeeded yet, not because you haven’t ‘humbled yourself enough’ yet, but because you haven’t dreamed BIG enough yet. Reach for the stars. Forget the ‘eating’ job. You will eat.

If it is truly the case that you are here to do something wonderful, you may ask, why am I struggling?

Because as Daryl Kojak, musician and arranger is fond of saying,

‘If making a record were easy, everybody would have one!’

You came here to do something in your life. Perhaps you’ve known since you were a child, that you were to do something really, really big. You ask yourself, if that’s the case, why haven’t I done it yet? Because, maybe the future you felt, that you saw, is still in the future. Maybe you haven’t met the right people yet, picked up the right book, lived thru the necessary learning experiences, accessed all the right combinations to bring that fortune into fruition. Maybe it hasn’t happened—yet. But it’s coming—as long as you keep on believing, and don’t ever give up.

I ask people, ‘What is the thing you have known since a child that you came here to do?’ And they always, always have an answer. It’s usually something along the lines of, ‘I don’t know exactly what it is, but I’m here to help people in some way that has to do with….’and with further questioning, you find out, they DO know exactly what it is..just not what it looks like.

How do you follow your greatness, when you don’t know the way? When you don’t know what it looks like? Here we reach the principles of manifestation in the energy world—you may not know what it looks like, but you know what it feels like. It involves doing something that you love to do. Think about what those things are, the things people say you’re good at, that make you happy. Put yourself in that feeling for a moment,. Now, again, how do you follow your greatness, when you don’t know the way? You follow those things that make you feel wonderful to do.

Some practices will have you to visualize exactly what you want, and they’ll have you create a ‘wheel of fortune’, a montage of pictures. Yes, seeing that wheel is powerful, it impresses the subconscious with the desires you’re striving for. But what if you don’t know the whole picture? None of us ever really does. As much as we think we know, nobody gets to know what happens in the future, until, surprise! Visualization is beautiful, but action is the key. You may have a feeling you’re going to the White House—but years before, you don’t know if you’re going to be the President, the first Spouse, or the Press Secretary. This is where action is key: you won’t get anywhere unless you hang around the political process or political people, or spend time doing whatever you love, that will attract those people to your skills. If the thought of being with that kind of people makes your heart sink, maybe it’s not for you.

There’s a saying of encouragement we’ve all heard, ‘Take heart.’

There’s another saying, “Follow your heart.’

The feelings of your heart, your body, the truth inside, are the surest guides on your path.

Your feelings are like Hansel and Gretel’s breadcrumbs on the path.

What makes us feel happy, light, and free is right for us.

What makes us feel sick, heavy, and negative is not.

Take the feel test. Think of the most negative person or work environment you know. How do you feel when you’re around them?

Early in recovery, I was told, ‘Surround yourself with people who love and respect you.’

And, ‘Stick with the winners.’ This is good advice in life, and in business. You don’t need scientific instruments to judge positive energy. You have a built in receptor.

You know who these people are. You feel good around them—unless, you’re caught in the vortex of the negative ego. And then, no matter how otherwise good it feels, no matter what other ego boost it gives you, you will feel slightly sick about it, slightly less-than, sucking up, unnaturally nervous, or not good enough. There’s a positive ego, who helps us to survive and succeed in the world. And there’s a negative ego, whose greatest tool is fear and doubt. The negative ego takes on many guises. We are learning to feel our way thru discernment.

First, we must get a grip on what our fears really are, and the emotions, and almost as important, where they live in the body. Because our fears usually go back to some old, old place, unresolved since childhood, where we have made a grave error of understanding. We think we are unlovable, or we cannot trust life, or everybody leaves us, or we are bad, or that there is no salvation for us, whatever our particular pathos is.

When we’re under stress, our fears and emotions kick into that same old place, pushing that same old button in a particular place in our body. Over the years, our body begins to develop armoring in this place..the muscles become rigid and locked, or weakened, and then energy doesn’t flow thru. And instead of breathing in and out and processing the energy of the emotion and allowing it to roll thru the body like a wave and out, the armor blocks the energy and you have, commonly, a locked-up diaphragm keeping you from breathing deeply and flexibly.

The first thing that happens when we get scared is, we don’t breathe, or the breathing becomes shallow. That place just above your belly, where your lungs and your diaphragm pump your breath, are where your inner power and presence lie. They are also where trust lives, or lack of it. We get scared and don’t breathe, because we have lost our trust that everything is okay. An old lie has kicked in. But this program is about re-discovering our true nature. We are created in love, and we exist in love, not fear. No wonder fear blocks the divine blueprint of energy of the body.

Breathing is actually the greatest act of trust in the human experience—and perhaps the reason we have not mastered the art of living in space or undersea. Think of it: Every time you breathe in, and breathe out again—you are trusting that there will be another breath.

Breathing is the best way to show trust in this moment—that you can breathe in, and out, and trust that there will be another breath, that the emotion will pass, and you won’t die.

That you are okay in this moment. And you return to this moment.

The emotions settled for this moment, we turn to the mind, and sort out the weeds.

We call on good orderly direction for the mind. We examine facts. What exactly is the problem? What exactly is the likelihood of this problem occurring? Did my actions contribute to it? What did I do to contribute to it? What could I have done differently? What have I learned for next time?

Now, what can I do now to reclaim my personal power in the situation? Do I have control over any elements of this? I have control over my response—let me make a plan how to act in preparation, or in response. There, is that all I can do? Then, I have made a plan.

Now, I must take action. I must put the plan in motion. And I then actively surrender my fear and worry. This is the big test. Sometimes surrendering worry is a daily, hourly, moment by moment action. We may have been taught that worry is good, worry is a way to control life. Worry does nothing but create pictures of disaster in our mind. And remember, the mind is a powerful thing; what we focus on, we create. If our mind is constantly visioning pictures of worry, of disaster, our powerful minds may conjure up just those circumstances. That is why we must spend at least as much energy actively giving up worry, and retraining our attention to the positive, as we spent learning to worry. But giving up worry is a positive action within my control to take. I don’t need to worry, when I have constuctively anaylyzed the situation, and done what I could do about it. Now I let it go.

And how do I occupy my mind without the weeds of worry growing there?

I change the focus. I jump back into this moment here now.

I do something creative and move into that creating space. I do something physically mindful, like swim laps or wash the car, and spend time in that moment with the water. I go into nature, and feel the trees and breeze and flowers. I go to art, and gaze into that space of color and form. I connect with another human being and I spend time with them there in that space between us..Or I do something for someone else without them even knowing it, and enter that good-elf space. Or, I pray or sing, and spend time in that sacred space.

Or maybe, I let my mind rest, and allow it to be spoken to by a higher mind.

A beautiful theory teaches that we live in between the breaths of God.

They can lead to continuation of ill fortune or even debt.

I came across these wise words long ago, the source not forgotten:

Forgive, even tho no apology has been made.

Otherwise you risk living your life in bitterness, in reaction to the actions of others.

But how do we forgive the unacceptable, without appearing to accept it?

I have found we need to achieve a place safe from the hands of the offender before we can begin to think about forgiving.

Once safe, sit down with this meditation:

‘I forgive this action, and I do not accept the intention of harm. All is clear between us.’

I practice those words over and over, letting whatever old past injuries float up.

The beauty of this is,

a-	we forgive

b-	we do not let any intention of harm penetrate our core

c-	in case we are mistaken about someone intending harm, we have now neutralized it in our own hearts!

The problem with hurts and forgiveness is that sometimes the person meant no harm.

People do what they do, they don’t necessarily do it to us personally. Sometimes the person did no objective wrong—we were just sensitive. Or, the person had no idea what harm would be done to us by doing what they do. In that case, the intention and degree of harm has come from our own hearts, doing damage every time we have nursed and nurtured the grudge, and injured us and now the other person we are angry with!

Think about it—do you unconsciously nurse old wounds because they allow you to remain angry, hurt, separate, and apart?

It’s time to give it up.

It’s the hardest thing you can do, but it will free you in ways you can’t even imagine yet.

A simple and elegant change of thinking will turn a day of fear, worry, and paralysis into a new day of optimistic action.

Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want.

This one thought has amazing, immediate powers.

When you find yourself ensconced in your fears, when your fears and worries begin to pile up and multiply in your head and you begin to feel buried under the avalanche and to get that sick feeling, remember what it is you’re going for.

Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want.

Remembering to do this when you are afraid is the hardest thing in the world.

Once you remember, you’re home free.

Just flip your thinking. Instead of the fears, focus on your goals, what you’re trying to build, create, achieve.

Don’t argue, don’t worry about how it’s going to work. That’s the job of your higher mind. You are accessing your higher mind, and paying no more mind to the demons.

Just follow this direction:

Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want.

Your thinking will immediately turn around to support you in creating that desire, and set you on a course of action.

It’s amazing how fast it works.

Focus on what you want, not on what you don’t want.

Think of this phrase often. It will turn your thinking around.

When it does, remember to say a little prayer of thanks for the help.

Fear is an illusion. You have just sent the fear back to the field of illusions.

Instead, you are creating out of your very own Field of Dreams.

The beauty of this ugly economy is, it’s the great leveler: we’re all going through it together. Some of us on a spiritual path have been wrestling with the change

since before it even happened, so we have experience to share, to help you get through.

And it’s all about doing whatever it takes—but doing it with honor.

Even Mickey Rourke’s ‘The Wrestler’ ended up with a few shining moments,

working behind a downscale NJ grocery deli counter. You’ve got to see ‘The Wrestler’. It’s extraordinary, and disturbing, and the product of real life—what happens when the star falls. It rings true, because, as Mickey Rourke told Barbara Walters, he went through it himself.

That’s the hallmark of experience, how you know who to trust: you can feel it in your bones. What they say rings true.

In the beginning, you tend to look on the job of your new life without work, as humiliation. But in the end, it brings the true meaning of humility—with humility defined as knowing who you truly are in the world, and honoring yourself.

That’s because the truth is, you make the job. The job doesn’t make you, no matter what you do. You make who you are in life, by how you respond. Life doesn’t make you; it sort of forges you, steel against the stone. Life builds character.

So it’s okay to hold your head up, get up, and do what you have to do.

Knowing this doesn’t make it hurt any less, the hit to your pride. But in this economy, there is no shame, like so many of use faced ‘back in the day’ just a few years ago, when we were unable to reach out for help—or if we did, we were regarded as bearing some kind of shameful secret. But we were forging the path for a more spiritualizing time in the world, a world where it’s not about the money—even if you live in the most material of worlds!

I’ll never forget the beautiful Hawaiian woman who dispensed a black pearl of wisdom—

‘Never do anything that makes you feel less-than.’ There-in lies the difference between humiliation, and humility—being who you are, with honor.

My very first outing with humility, after being summarily dumped from a pinnacle of broadcast news: I’d been on the air every day of my life, since I was 17, on the radio. Suddenly, I couldn’t get arrested. 9/11 came. I had seen it coming, but people didn’t want to hear. And I was lost, a Medium without a medium. So I studied, and trained, and volunteered and worked with everything interesting to me, music and energy and politics and kids and helping people talk to each other. Just as if I were still on the air.

And then one day, a wise friend, a big-time Producer saved me with his gift of perspective:

‘Therese: You’re a performer no matter what you do.’ Isn’t that the truth? All of life is a performance—being exactly who you are. Or as Shakespeare would say, ‘All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women, merely players.’

Y’know what happens when you tune into who you are, stay true to yourself, and live by your principles? Something beautiful:

With work or without, I’ve always been taken care of—always had a roof over my head. The other day on ABC News Now, I heard that Eckhart Tolle, the spiritual guru, was homeless for seven years! That’s how he learned what he learned, about living in this moment. And that makes me feel very, very fortunate—to get to learn how to be okay in this moment. Without material security, you begin to tune into the magic of life: the money always comes from somewhere. And then you begin to be able to trust, and look on life as an adventure, where we are always safe and secure.

Gratitude goes a long way. The trick is, to be grateful for what you have, not to look at what you have lost—to focus on what you have, and all you have to give.

Years of living thru hard times in a changing world tend to make you rich –rich with experiences to help others, and an understanding of the human heart through tough times.

The game of life can be a real wrestling match—we all fall short at times. But getting up off the mat begins by respecting yourself, honoring yourself, and finding your own true humility. Like Mickey Rourke, the star, even behind the deli counter—but not when his dignity comes under attack by cruel people.

So, rule of thumb:

‘Never do anything that makes you feel less than.’

Your soul knows. Listen to the prompting of your spirit, that little voice that says

’Hey, what if you tried this job? It might even be fun!!!’ Because you never know, where this ‘little job thing’ might lead…but the moment your thumb goes into the slicer, your soul will know, it’s time to go. Save yourself. Be true to you.

And, another pearl of wisdom from my beautiful Hawaiian friend:

‘Surround yourself with people who love and respect you.’
